FAQ: (FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS) TEA COUNCIL OF THE USA, INC. CALM-A-SUTRA OF TEA™ NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

  1. WHAT IS THE “CALM-A-SUTRA” OF TEA?

The “Calm-A-Sutra” of Tea™ is a nationwide search for the most unique and creative way to drink tea, specifically black, green, white or oolong tea, which are all from the Camellia sinensis plant, while explaining what aspects of tea’s various health-related benefits appeal to you and why.

In addition, this national scholarship competition sponsored by the Tea Council of the USA is meant to further educate America’s young people on the health-related benefits of drinking tea.
  2. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
Create a 1-2 minute homemade Internet video of yourself drinking tea (hot or iced; black, green, white and oolong tea with no specific commercial brand mentions) in the most unusual, unique and/or off-beat scenario while explaining what aspects of tea’s health-related benefits appeal to you and why.
  3. WHY IS IT CALLED THE ‘CALM-A-SUTRA’ OF TEA? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN EXACTLY?
The Calm-A-Sutra of Tea is a play on words. “Calm” for the calming effect tea is known to have, which is one of the many reasons people choose to drink it. And “Sutra,” which literally means a rope or thread that holds things together, and more metaphorically refers to a collection of rules, as in a guide. Thus, in the “Calm-A-Sutra” of Tea, we are asking people to tell and show us how and why they drink tea.
  4. WHAT KIND OF VIDEO ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? IS THERE AN EXAMPLE OF ONE?
Think of this as a video essay on why you drink tea, and don’t forget to have some real creative fun with it. For example, last year’s winner, “The Tougher Side of Tea” featured three construction workers sitting down to enjoy lunch when one of the three begins to pour himself a cup of tea. The other two proceeded to make fun of him for his un-masculine behavior but quickly changed their tune when he began to explain the health benefits of why everyone should drink tea. By the end of the scene, all three construction workers were toasting with tea cups. This video was selected as the unanimous winner by the Tea Council panel of judges because it told a story that was entertaining to watch and emphasized the many health related benefits of drinking tea in a conversational tone that was easy to follow yet informative at the same time.
  5. WHY TEA?
Tea is great tasting and calorie-free, but more importantly, it’s full of flavonoids, which are believed to be health-protective antioxidants and ultimately make drinking tea part of a satisfying, healthy lifestyle.
  6. WHAT IF I NEED HELP WITH FINDING OUT ABOUT THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF TEA?
Please check out our section on Tea & Health at www.teausa.org/general/teaandhealth/ for more specific information on tea’s many health-related benefits; however, this may require you to put your thinking cap on and do a little online research to find out the specific health-related benefits included in tea and which ones you find most appealing.
  7. WHAT KINDS OF TEA ARE APPROPRIATE?
Hot or iced black, green, white or oolong tea with no specific commercial brand mentions are appropriate choices. Herbal teas are not included.
  8. WHY NO SPECIFIC BRAND MENTIONS?
Because the Tea Council represents all tea and not one specific brand; to show favor to one would not be fair to the others. Above all, the objective of this competition is to answer the “how” and “why” you drink tea – not “what” brand of tea.
  9. WHO CAN ENTER TO WIN?
This contest is open to legal residents of the United States and Puerto Rico, who are at least 16 years of age as of May 8, 2008. 17. WHO IS THE TEA COUNCIL OF THE USA?
The Tea Council of the USA is a non-profit association that was formed in 1950 as a joint partnership between tea packers, importers and allied industries within the United States, and the major tea producing countries. It functions as the educational arm of the tea industry with a primary goal of increasing overall awareness of tea by providing information about its many positive attributes.

One of the Council’s primary objectives is the dissemination of key scientific findings about tea to the public. The Tea Council does this in several ways including: funding scientific meetings to bring tea researchers from around the world together to share key information and identify next steps for future research projects; and working with health organizations and international scientists to disseminate information about potential positive health effects of tea consumption on a public level.

Additional efforts of the Tea Council include outreach to the health professional community, support and monitoring of key scientific meetings internationally, and ongoing interaction with leading tea researchers.
